Clipper round the world 2023/24

Faszinated by the sea since early days of childhood and keen to understand how things work, I turned this into my profession and served as ships engineer in the navy. Learned to lead people, fix things and enjoy time at sea!
Turned into automotive development with similar attitude: Enjoy and develop technical stuff, working with many people across globe and across cultures. Now leaving the rat race, it’s time for a new chapter with Clipper Race; another life changing adventure!
Looking forward to sail with motivated crew, make lot’s of new friends and create unforgettable memories for a lifetime…

Clipper training

Serveral level of training required to become an ocean racer
In total 4 levels of training…. however in level 4 all gets together: Sailing on „my“ yacht „HalongBay“ with my crew and my skipper team. How do we interact, how do we all get along and most important: How can we sail the yacht faster than all other crews?

After more than 30 years in the job, it has become time to do something different. Leaving the rat race is a tough decision to make, letting all the achievements of a working life behind.
Still, do something different!
Something remarkable…
And exactly this is the slogan of “Clipper round the world” (CRTW), a yacht race circumnavigating the globe.
Considering the background as naval engineer it was very obvious that I had to apply for this….and I got selected! Goosebumps!!!
Several levels of training in the UK, how does a 70ft racing yacht handle versus the regular “holiday” charter boats? There is definitely a huge difference, both from sailing as well as from comfort aspect.
Physically very demanding, yet very rewarding from a sailing aspect. Lot’s of new things to learn, so many new people to meet. Which is another very rewarding aspect of CRTW to meet interesting people with a wide range of backgrounds, multiple cultures, languages, skill sets etc.
Finally, who will be my crew mates, which boat will I be on and last but no least: Who will be my skipper to sail around the globe?  Many questions to be answered, more to come….

CREW Allocation

Portsmouth, May 20, 2023

3 levels of training are done, tension is rising on the big questions:
What skipper team?
Which yacht?
Who will be my crew mates?
All of those questions found their answers during crew allocation mid of May in Portsmouth.
To go one by one: Josh Stickland is the skipper. Elle Hebron is Mate.
“Ha Long Bay” (CV31 as the yachts registration) is the yacht to carry me around the globe.
And there is a crew of 46 men and 18 women, representing 21 nations. I am 1 out of 9 to circumnavigate…
Here is the link to follow the race, find skipper and crew diaries as well as information on race, position and others:

Ha Long Bay… supposed to be a very beautiful spot, this is official race partner of the yacht and at the same time the location of an very important business partner from my previous job. Coincidence, Causation, law of resonance? Definitely looking forward to see Vietnam as I have not been there (yet)….
